Fun-filled day held for drug awareness

The youth enjoyed participating in games and dance competitions.

SANCA Eastern Gauteng held a successful drug awareness campaign at Jaffies Park on November 5.

The campaign was aimed at educating the community about the dangers of drug and substance abuse.

Attendees learnt ways to prevent themselves from using drugs and how to live a happy, clean life. The programme aims to prepare them from an early stage to avoid drugs and reach their full potential.

According to one of the organisers, Nomathemba Hintsho, they are happy with a turnout, especially because of the support they got from the children.

“The event was an absolute productive one, filled with love and unity. The current situation in Windmill Park area, regarding the drugs, is heartbreaking. We wanted to reach out to the drug addicts and elderly people to bring a sense of understanding between the two.

“The day was filled with laughter and excitement of young children enjoying themselves to the fullest, participating in games, face painting, dance competitions and just enjoying the day with us. This is what we need to focus on more, prevention. Teaching them there’s more to life than drugs and alcohol.

“I appreciate all the speakers (which were addicts and recovering addicts) and performers that encouraged the young people that were there and who are struggling with drugs and alcohol abuse,” she said.

Hintsho added the event had meaning and a sense of encouragement to a lot of addicts that were present.

“There’s a seed planted of recovery and therefore we can say this event was successful and there was individuals touched and encouraged.

“It’s possible to live a clean life and be happy about it.”

She thanked members from SANCA Eastern Gauteng (Boksburg), Ke Moja Programme (Boksburg), African Youth Development Fund (AYDF), Old mutual, AVBOB and the Windmill Park community.
