DUT student accepts diploma on behalf of late sister

It was a bittersweet moment for Thembelihle Hlophe who had to accept her diploma and her late sister, Amanda Hlophe’s diploma at the DUT 2024 Autumn Graduation Ceremonies.

A DAY that was supposed to be a celebration for Clermont sisters has opened wounds for the family as one sister will not see the fruits of her hard work after her life was cut short in a car accident.

Amanda Hlophe passed away in June 2023 after finishing her three-year course in Eco Tourism. Her sister, Thembelihle Hlophe (21), will also be getting her Diploma in Business Administration at the Durban University of Technology under the Pietermaritzburg branch.

“We even wore matching outfits most of the time.”

She said her sister’s death really broke her and left a huge gap in her life.

Thembelihle and her sister, Amanda, shared a special bond.

“We had many dreams. The sad part is that she was really looking forward to the graduation ceremony. Her sudden passing really broke our family, and this will open wounds as we have not dealt with her death.

Thembelihle said that what she admired about her sister was that she never gave up and was very dedicated to her schoolwork. She was also part of the South Africa Students Congress.
