Isolated holiday home used as hideout in alleged baby kidnapping case

The nanny was seen with the baby in a remote location in Seatides, outside Tongaat.

A 38-year-old nanny found herself in handcuffs last Thursday, accused of snatching her employer’s seven-month-old baby.

The woman, who worked as a domestic worker while also taking care of her employers’ infant son, allegedly absconded from the house in Tongaat on Wednesday, May 1, taking the baby’s belongings and documentation with her.

iLembe cluster police spokesperson Alex Thomson said police were tipped off that she was seen with the baby in a remote location in Seatides.

“The iLembe District FCS Unit, along with the iLembe District Task Team and Crime Intelligence, responded and successfully rescued the baby, leading to the suspect’s arrest,” said Thomson.

Police discovered that the woman had hidden the baby at a holiday home in an isolated area where she was previously employed and retained access to the property.

The baby was safely reunited with his mother.

The woman appeared in KwaDukuza Magistrate’s Court on Monday where bail was denied. She was remanded in custody on charges of kidnapping.
