Another tragic accident in Dundee CBD claims a construction worker’s life

The sharp bend, where five roads meet, as long been feared by motorists and residents alike.

A construction worker was killed after being struck by a vehicle that appeared to veer out of control.
The accident happened at the corner of Bulwer and Wilson streets, near the Home Affairs Department, on Sunday afternoon.
The victim was with other workers, busy renovating a corner building, when an ND-registered Audi sped up Commercial Road and went into the construction area.
The Audi then spun into a nearby property, where it came to a standstill.
Emergency services responded quickly, but the victim sadly died at the scene. SAPS took the driver to the police station.
He is to be charged with culpable homicide. Other charges could be added once the senior public prosecutor has perused the docket, said police.
Those who live and operate businesses in the area said this corner is a ‘high-risk spot’, with numerous accidents reported there in recent months. Two other people have died in similar accidents in recent months in the same area.

Onlookers watching rescue services at the scene of the accident. The shoddy road and pavement is also a source of irritation to people in the area.

“It is perilous, as five routes are converging on one sharp bend. Vehicles, including trucks, race up and down Wilson Street and have to negotiate the turn at Home Affairs. The authorities must look at an alternative here before more people die,” said a resident.
Another resident who contacted the Courier said the pavement is damaged and a pedestrian fell into an uncovered hole and had to be treated in hospital.
They call for the municipality to either install speed humps or reconstruct the road to make it safer. A response from the municipality will be published when received.
