Bus carrying high school learners catches fire on the R80 Highway

At least two female learners have been transported to hospital for medical attention 

Two female students were transported to hospital after a bus carrying 62 high school learners caught fire on Tuesday afternoon.

The incident occurred on the R80 Northbound at the Theo Martins Poort.

The occupants managed to alight from the bus before it could completely burn.

“Firefighters managed to extinguish the fire,” said Tshwane Emergency Services spokesperson Charles Mabaso.

Mabaso said at least two female pupils have been transported to 1 Military Hospital.

“The ages of the learners are unknown,” he said.

He said the bus had carried 62 high school learners.

He closed by saying, “The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.”

Two lanes on the R80 highway from Eskia Mphahlele were closed off.
