North residents urged to put an end to illegal dumping

Tshwane has given the metro police teeth to seize the vehicles being used for illegal dumping.

The Tshwane metro has warned against illegal dumping as Pretoria North residents are ready to pull their hair out over the mushrooming scourge.

The metro has adopted a zero-tolerance approach towards illegal dumping, working with the Tshwane metro police (TMPD), waste management and environment compliance teams to fight the problem in the area.

Mayor Cilliers Brink said the metro is intensifying its by-law enforcement, and will also confiscate vehicles used by dumpers and fine them heavily.

“We need to work together to keep Tshwane clean.

“As the metro and to improve our services, we have embarked on a waste management data verification project to address waste service billing accuracy and other related matters, such as applying for additional bins,” said Brink.

Illegal dumping poses environmental and health risks and creates an unpleasant and unhealthy living environment for residents.

The mayor said there is no excuse for illegal dumping.

“The metro has operational waste disposal sites that are accessible to the public for domestic and garden refuse, and residents are encouraged to use these facilities to help keep Tshwane clean.

“It is also important to note that waste bins are provided to residents for free.”

Households with excess waste and backroom dwellers are encouraged to apply for additional bins.

Brink recently joined a Tswelopele campaign in Pretoria North ward 2 to clean several spots.

A total of 1 050 bags of waste were collected on Koos De La Rey, Gerrit Maritz, Jan Van Riebeeck and Station streets.

The team cut grass and repaired streetlights and water leaks.

The campaign aims to encourage residents and businesses to work with the metro to clean up their communities and living spaces.

To deliver waste collection services, the metro levies a monthly service fee of R407. 04.

“Domestic landfill sites for the disposal of domestic waste of 1.3 tons or less are accessible for free.

“This service is accessible to all residents, companies or institutions.

“Waste that weighs more than 1.3 tons will be charged a fee of R230 per ton,” said Brink.

Metro landfill sites in the north are located in Dorandia at Daan Der Wet Nel Avenue and Magalieskruin Koorsboom Avenue in Sinoville.

Tshwane would like to call on residents to report illegal dumping to the metro police on 012 358 7095/7096.
