The European Union recently donated over 200 books and a book voucher worth R4 700 to the Pretoria Central High School in honour of World Book Day.
World Book Day was commemorated on April 23, with this year’s theme: “Read Your Way”.
April 23 was chosen by the UNESCO General Conference in Paris in 1995 to honour authors William Shakespeare, Miguel Cervantes and Inca Garcilaso de la Vega, who all died on the same date, and to encourage global access to books.
On their social media page, educators and learners expressed their appreciation for the donation and their thoughts on the importance of reading.
“We’re honoured to have the European Union donating books to us as it is World Book Day. They are giving us tons of books, which will make a great difference for our learners, the school at large and our community,” said educator and reading club co-ordinator, Ncumisa Mpohlo.
Grade 11 learner Elise Nyambi said reading is not only the act of reading the words on a page, but also placing yourself in the book.
“It’s not only about reading but also putting yourself in a character’s shoes, understanding how they feel and using your understanding of emotions to process those emotions. The donation to me means allowing every learner to understand what that feels like,” Nyambi said.
Fellow learner, Khathutshelo Munarini quoted Dr Suess, who said that the more you read, the more you know and the more you know, the more places you’ll go.
“This quote not only emphasises the liberation that reading brings but also emphasises how reading will take you places that you can only dream of visiting,” Munarini said.
The books will be added to the school’s library, while the voucher will enhance the school’s stock and children’s reading skills.
