Burnt mini-sub station to affect electricity supply in Polokwane CBD

A municipal team is currently assessing the extent of damage and estimating a time frame for repairs and restoration of power supply.

POLOKWANE – The Polokwane Municipality said they are currently addressing a power outage that is affecting certain parts of the CBD.

Municipal spokesperson Thipa Selala said the outage is caused by a mini substation at caught fire and that the municipal fire and rescue services team is working at the corner of Grobler and Landdros Mare Streets to manage the situation.

“While the fire has been extinguished, the municipal electrical team is assessing the extent of damage and estimating a time frame for repairs and restoration of power supply. In the interest of safety, the municipality advises all affected businesses and other users to treat all electrical wiring as live and to switch off all appliances until power supply is fully restored to avoid injury and damage,” his statement read.

Selala told the Polokwane Review-Observer that “only certain parts” of the CBD will be affected.

“The area between Jorrisen and Thabo Mbeki Streets as well as between Landdros Mare and Hans van Rensburg is currently affected,” he said.

Selala added that motorists are urged to treat affected traffic lights as stop signs for the duration of the downtime.
