Another unattended Joburg Water excavation

Joburg Water is a water and sanitation utility, providing residents with access to quality water and sanitation services.

Johannesburg Water (JW) was approached with questions regarding an excavation on Grosvenor Road in Bryanston that’s been left open for weeks.

The earlier assumption was that the site fell within the jurisdiction of the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) when they were contacted on January 23.

JRA spokesperson Bertha Peters-Scheepers rectified this, indicating that the JRA would do what they were able to, yet could only properly service the site once JW had completed their processes.

“Reinstatement on Grosvenor Road will be undertaken together with area roads in Region B in due course,” Peters-Scheepers had responded to the original enquiry.

JW was contacted on January 31 and asked to supply feedback to an extensive enquiry about the excavation. This included:

JW were also asked if the site adhered to regulatory compliance, and were furthermore questioned about the environmental impact, and what measures are in place to prevent environmental damage during and after the excavation.

JW spokesperson Nombuso Shabalala responded on February 1 indicating that the deadline for going to print was noted, though that adequate feedback would take a while longer to supply.

Feedback was received on February 9, though the brief response from Shabalala only paved the way to more questions on the matter.

“Apologies for the late response; we were struggling with tracking down the job/case without a reference number,” Shabalala said. “We have searched for the call using the address you provided – however, we couldn’t trace it on our internal system. A Johannesburg Water team will visit the site by the end of the weekend to investigate the matter further.”
