The female dog was safely rescued from the drain and taken to the SPCA where she will either be reunited with an owner or assessed for adoption.

“After assessing the situation, they realised they would need help from the fire department. After about 30 minutes, the poor dog was safely rescued from the drain,” she said.

The SPCA’s Michelle Hannan said since it was a stray dog, and they would check for a microchip and the lost book to see if she had been reported missing. “If no luck, then we will keep the dog as a stray for a week to see if someone claims her. If not, we can assess her for adoption,” she said.

Girling thanked members of the public for bringing these situations to their attention instead of turning a blind eye and letting an animal suffer. She also thanked the Umkomaas Fire Department for always being willing to help as well Keyser and Mncwengi for never giving up.
