Rallying support for Olivia’s drummies journey

Olivia’s passion for drummies has put her on a course to compete in nationals and eventually represent South Africa in the world championships.

OLIVIA Johnston is a vibrant nine-year-old fuelled by her love for dance, particularly the electrifying rhythms of drummies.

Her journey into this world of dynamic movement and precision began with admiration for her stepsister, who was already immersed in the sport.

“She used to take the broom’s head off and use the stick to practise and copy what she saw on TikTok,” recalls Olivia’s mother, Shavone Stoffels. “I saw something in her; I saw growth and I saw potential. So, I decided to let her join.”

However, Olivia’s pursuit of her passion for drummies presents a significant financial hurdle. Stoffels is now spearheading efforts to garner support to fund Olivia’s participation in the upcoming Drummies Nationals in Cape Town this September.

The total cost of R13 100 encompasses transportation, accommodation, meals, uniforms and necessary props for the duration of the competition. “If she and the rest of the team get selected, they get to represent us at the world championships,” explained Stoffels.

Despite juggling a demanding schedule filled with school commitments, exams and rigorous training sessions four days a week, Olivia remains resolute in her determination to succeed.

Stoffels is reaching out to local businesses and residents, appealing for their assistance in realising Olivia’s dreams of competing in the nationals.

Donations can be made directly to the nationals’ ABSA Bank account number 9343023895, with the reference ‘Olivia Johnston nationals’. Alternatively, Stoffels has established a BackaBuddy campaign, accessible at https://www.backabuddy.co.za/campaign/help-olivia-get-to-cape-town.
