Make sure you pay Eskom, not fraudsters!

Emfuleni electricity customers have been warned to double-check if they are in fact paying their power bills into the real Eskom bank account and not that of fraudsters.

Both Eskom and the Emfuleni Local Municipality (ELM) have warned of a fraudulent letter circulating in Emfuleni instructing customers to pay their electricity bills into a bank account which is not Eskom’s.

The Golden Triangle Chamber of Commerce (GTCoC) has expressed its shock at the scam, saying especially business customers should confirm Eskom banking details with the GTCoC before paying.

Eskom manages the distribution side – supply – of electricity for ELM as their agent, and customers have been migrating to pay their power bills to Eskom instead of ELM in recent months.

The GTCoC was instrumental in achieving the pay Eskom direct move through court action several years ago and has been working closely with both Eskom and ELM on account migration.

The account changeover  has now created fertile ground for con artists and fraudsters who exploit the fact that consumers are not yet fully familiar with Eskom payment details.
