Correctional Services and Department of Education collaborate to enhance schools

Parolees are allocated to maintain school gardens, ensuring their upkeep and contributing to community development in eMalahleni.

Witbank Correctional Services and the Department of Education have joined forces to uplift communities through various initiatives aimed at improving infrastructure, promoting education, and preventing crime.

The two departments have undertaken several projects, one of which involves the adoption of schools.

Mogalitwa Primary School is one such school that has benefited from this partnership.

Peter Msthweni, a representative from Correctional Services, stated, “We are allocating parolees to work in the community, and as time goes on, Mogalitwa Primary School will have a fully functional garden, thanks to the efforts of these parolees.”

The parolees are responsible for maintaining the school gardens, which includes planting and watering seedlings, weeding, and ensuring the safety and upkeep of the vegetables grown.

Furthermore, Correctional Services and the Department of Education have signed a national memorandum of understanding furthering their collaborative efforts.

This agreement encompasses various projects, including fixing broken desks and tables, cleaning school premises, and conducting crime awareness campaigns.

Mpumalanga Premier Refilwe Mtsweni-Tsipane commended the Correctional Services for their commitment to uplifting communities.

She said, “We are very thankful for the initiatives they are undertaking. With their support, schools like Mogalitwa Primary School will never face food shortages, as they will have their own garden.”
