Putco bus catches fire: 22 injured

Commuters jumped out of windows to escape fire as the bus they were travelling in caught fire.

Tshwane emergency services (EMS) has confirmed that passengers had to jump out of windows to safety when a bus caught alight on Moloto Road on March 27.

Spokesperson Deputy Chief Charles Mabaso said four commuters had to be taken to hospital for their injuries in the morning.

According to social media reports, the Putco bus was on the R573 en route from Centurion.

“It is unclear what caused the injuries because some people were jumping out of the bus,” Mabaso said.

Mabaso said the two men and two women suffered moderate injuries.

Gauteng emergency services rushed the four to the Montana hospital, said Mabaso.

“The fire was extinguished before the Tshwane emergency services arrived on the scene,” he said.

According to Putco spokesperson Lindokuhle Xulu the cause of the fire is yet to be established.

“As investigations are still ongoing to determine the cause of the accident, we are actively collaborating with relevant authorities to gather all necessary information,” said Xulu.

He said that they have provided prompt passenger assistance, particularly in addressing the injured.

Xulu expressed his sympathies with the injured and praised the emergency services for their quick response.

“Our thoughts are with the 22 passengers who were injured and we extend our gratitude to the emergency response teams, including private and state ambulances, for their swift actions and support during this challenging time,” he said.
