Lanka’s time to shine
KwaThema - Nomathemba ‘Lanka’ Ntsibande (29), from KwaThema, has been selected to represent the country in Kenya in the third round of the Fifa Women’s 2016 Olympic qualifier.
Lanka says soccer is the one sport that keeps her body and mind healthy at all times.
After Lanka had tried other sports in primary school she decided to focus on soccer. That was over 10 years ago and she has not looked back since.
Lanka joined the Springs Home Sweepers when she was only 12 years old. Her love of and talent for soccer made her grow, gain and hone her soccer skills.
The young midfielder says she is one of the best female soccer players because of the training she has received from her Sweepers coach, Skheshe Mkhonza.
The one thing that she will never forget is the discipline and respect Mkhoza has taught her.
“Discipline does not only refer to good behaviour, but it also includes taking serious and loving what you do,” says Lanka.
Giving a word of advise to up and coming female soccer stars, Lanka encourages them to continue their education first before making soccer their career.
“Soccer is a short-term career and one needs education to ensure that when your playing days come to an end, there is another source of income which will help feed your family,” adds Lanka.
She explains that her selection for the team was a proud moment for her.
“I will play to the best of my ability to represent my country well and fight for a win,” says a confident Lanka.
Coach Mkhonza says he is proud of Lanka’s achievement. He believes her dedication and unique skills on the field have brought her to where she is today.
Mkhonza says Lanka is a role model for many young township girls who dream of becoming the best and well known soccer players.
