Brazilians fuel up to win Helix Cup

Bernard Parker’s super sub’s last-minute superb header was too little too late to stop fuelling Brazilian celebrations as Mamelodi Sundowns lifted the inaugural Shell Helix Ultra Cup at the FNB Stadium.

Downs beat Kaizer Chiefs 2–1.

The cup was founded by Stadium Management South Africa and partner Shell, and was conceived as an effort to ensure a steady and continuous flow of funds to run the South Africa 2010 Fifa World Cup stadia in the country.

The game between Soweto Glamour Boys, Chiefs and Tshwane outfit, Sundowns, known as the Johannesburg-Tshwane Clash of the Titans, did not disappoint.

There were no goals in the first half as both teams sized each other up. Sundowns opened the scoring soon after the resumption through a brilliant Anthony Laffor strike that hit the upright and ricocheted off the advancing New Zealander Jeremy Brockie and into the back of the net.

Downs coach Pitso Mosimane had rested some of his players after their loss to AS Togo-Port in the African Champions League barely five days before. He brought on his other perennial goal poacher Themba Zwane who scored the Brazilians’ second in the 90th minute.

Impressive for Chiefs was new signing from Sundowns, Zimbabwean Khama Billiat. His trickery on the ball impressed the fans who chose him as Man of the Match before he was substituted for Brice Moon.

Another former Sundowns player, gangling striker Leonardo Castro, who formed the deadly CBD striking partnership while at Sundowns with Billiat and Keagan Dolly, was substituted for Parker, who headed home for Chiefs in the dying minutes.
