Raising awareness on World TB Day

JOBURG - NACOSA, the organisation that actively contributes to reducing the incidence of HIV/Aids and TB, is commemorating World TB Day by making you aware of 10 things you should know about Tuberculosis.

TB is the number one health problem in South Africa and surrounding countries, with 1 000 in every 100 000 people becoming infected.

The illness is spread through the air, which means that a person who has not started treatment can infect 10 to 15 other people when coughing, sneezing or through saliva.

Treatment for TB is provided freely by the government and if treated, can be cured.

Know your status and get tested because TB is the number one killer of HIV positive people, so if you develop a persistent cough make sure to be tested for both in order to receive the correct treatment.

Make sure to complete your cycle of medication as the virus does build up a drug resistance, which is a growing problem for people infected with TB.

Prisoners, miners and health workers have the highest risk of contracting the illness.

Persons suffering with Diabetes have a three times higher risk of contracting TB, which then complicates treatment for the Diabetes.

You can beat TB by living a healthy lifestyle, eating well and cutting down on smoking.

TB affects us all through contraction and the stigmatism that comes with it.

Don’t let TB take over your life, so be aware of the signs and symptoms in order to prevent them.
