MTN announced on October 20 the launch of its flagship digital soccer platform, MTN FC, providing subscribers with daily local and international soccer content from the world’s most exclusive international soccer publishers.

MTN has a long-standing history in South African soccer. To ensure that soccer fans are connected to their passion, MTN has developed MTN FC to give soccer fans the best in day-to-day digital soccer content; helping them to access news and information about their sports idols.

“We recognised that there is a significant gap in the market for a soccer content platform that delivers unique, high-quality content, particularly video content,” said Ernst Fonternel, chief digital officer at MTN South Africa. “MTN FC aims to bridge that gap and deliver a truly engaging daily digital soccer experience for the most fanatical of fans in South Africa.”

Managed by MTN partners, Avatar World Group and Wishlist Media, MTN FC covers both men’s and women’s soccer, every league and cup in South Africa – from the Premier Soccer League to the MTN8 – as well as all African competitions, such as the CAF Africa Cup of Nations, CAF Champions League, CAF Confederation Cup and more.

“We have been working with MTN on a number of mobile content platforms, and MTN FC represents the latest in a growing portfolio of products that puts the experience and enjoyment of the subscriber at its centre,” said AWG’s Africa regional director, Wayne Nelson-Esch. “The combination of unique content, a customer-centric platform and MTN’s soccer-loving subscriber base makes this an incredibly exciting opportunity.”

In addition, through partnerships with leading international soccer publishers, The Athletic and OneFootball, MTN FC includes extensive coverage of the major European and international leagues and competitions ― including the English Premier League, UEFA Champions League, FIFA World Cup and more.

The platform provides original local soccer videos, and also a broad variety of local news, features, analysis, opinion pieces and trivia games from the country’s best writers while the international content gives MTN FC subscribers exclusive access to a variety of top European league, club and player features and videos, including match highlights, behind-the-scenes access, player and coach interviews and other premium content.

“The purpose of MTN FC is to connect soccer fans in South Africa by giving them a platform that goes above and beyond to get the story behind the story, the interview or access that no-one else is getting,” Fonternel continued.

“We want to set a new benchmark in enjoyment for our subscribers. We are doing this by focusing on and creating local video content, by employing only the best local writers and by partnering with the world’s most exclusive international soccer publishers. This is about making our subscribers’ connection with their clubs, their favourite players and their sport a rich daily experience,” concluded Fonternel.
