Alex street barbers urged to join the free sessions

Sheldon Tatchell urges Alex barbers to come and imbibe on his tricks of the trade for success.

Barbers from Alexandra missed out on a golden opportunity to rub shoulders with legendary barber Sheldon Tatchell in a masterclass session designed to share some of the specialised skills that have built his business.

The street corner barbing business is one of the most popular in Alexandra and other townships and many of them in Alex were a no-show at the masterclass session which sought to transfer the skills that have made Tatchell the legendary barber he is today.

But all is not lost, for Alexandrian up-and-coming barbers will have another bite at the cherry when the Eldorado Park barber, who started his business at age 14 using classmates as guinea pigs, hosts another session in Newtown on May 2 to share the tricks of the trade as part of a marathon hair-cutting session for a record 2 000 people for free.

Tatchell opened his first barbershop in Eldos in 2014 and has since franchised them, dotting them all over the country with 62 shops to date. “I would like to share the skills with other up-and-coming barbers, so they too can grow their businesses and continue to blossom step by step,” he told his audience.

“I would love all those barbers in Alexandra and other places in Johannesburg to join us on May 2, so they can benefit from the knowledge I have accumulated over the years. It is my desire to see them grow as well just like I have grown over years. I will share the knowledge on how they can up their game to success,” he told Alex News in an interview.

Sponsors of the session, Nestlé’s marketing manager for chocolates Janet Birk, said they would like to roll out the session countrywide, depending on the success of this pilot project. “It’s hard times, especially after the Covid-19 global pandemic and people need to stand on their own two feet and start something, no matter how small.”
