Theatre academy plants early seed of creativity at ECDs

Shantel Selepe says the engagements were part of the academy's mission to share art tools with children in ECDs to stimulate and enable creativity at an early.

The Alexandra Theatre Company and Academy has embarked on a childhood arts development initiative for Early Childhood Development (ECD) centres as part of a programme to stimulate and enable creativity in children at an early age.

The first such session with ECDs started at the Bakgalaka Day Care Centre on February 16 where Shantel Selepe of the academy said they received a warm reception at the daycare and described the sessions with the children as productive and full of fun and engaging moments.

“I take off my hat for Bakgalaka for an amazing session. The first of its kind and we look forward to many more engagements with other ECDs in our township,” Selepe said, adding that the academy was already receiving enquiries from some ECDs that want a similar programme with them.

She said the engagements were part of the academy’s mission to teach art to children in ECDs to stimulate and enable creativity in children at an early age and also enhance their critical thinking.
“The creative arts boost the confidence of children and promote innovation and most importantly, sharpens their focus and concentration.”
