League ensures life for players after heydays in football

The Player Transition Programme seeks to empower current and retired players with skills for a life after their heydays in football.

The Premier Soccer League and MultiChoice launched the second season of the league’s Player Transition Programme which seeks to impart survival skills to retired players to cope with life after the beautiful game.

Building on the achievements of the pilot initiative in 2022, this year’s programme takes a bold step forward by including new talents who are embarking on their soccer journey together with the seasoned players aged between 28 and 35.
According to the league chairperson Dr Irvin ‘Iron Duke’ Khoza, the programme, which kicks off this January and will run until June, remains dedicated to equipping and empowering players with the knowledge and skills essential for a successful transition beyond their playing careers.

He said the programme continued to be a beacon of support, preparing players for a fulfilling life after professional sport and empowering them to have a lasting career.
“As we unveil the second season, we affirm our unwavering commitment to the holistic development of football talent beyond the pitch. Our dedication extends to nurturing both seasoned campaigners and new promising talent.
“This initiative stands as a testament to the league’s enduring commitment, together with its good corporate citizen partner, MultiChoice, to ensure that retired players still lead a decent life after their heydays in football,” Khoza said.

The Gordon Institute of Business Science has been roped in as the educational partner, responsible for developing an online educational platform, tutoring, and refining the framework for participant onboarding and training.
The virtual programme will adapt to the rigorous training and competition schedules of the players as it has included those still in the twilight of their playing careers.

The programme comprises four core modules – business fundamentals, information technology, financial management, and leadership – ensuring a comprehensive educational experience.

Participants will also have the opportunity to choose two electives from an array of options, including coach education, project management, facility management, business innovation, media officers, social entrepreneurship, merchandise management, and event management.
