Local animal shelter faces closure

Founder Jordan Soares said they did all they could, but unfortunately, it hasn’t been sustainable because so many cats need help.

Cat Mom Foster and Rescue, an animal rescue centre, is facing closure because of insufficient funding.

The NPO opened its doors in 2020 and has cared for 221 cats and rehomed 92.

Currently, they have 46 furry friends that need new homes and love.

Cat Mom founder Jordan Soares said cats deserve love as well.

The organisation’s founder, Jordan Soares, said it costs about R60 000 monthly to run the centre.
She said they had tried to find sponsors but had no success.

“I have emailed schools, estates, businesses and anyone I could think of,” said Jordan.

While they are in the process of shutting down, she said they first want to ensure that all of their cats find permanent homes.

“We are not going to shut down immediately, we are just not taking in any pets at the moment. We don’t want to surrender them to any organisation but find loving homes for them.

“Some of the cats have been with us for two to three years and are like my children,” she added.

She pleads with the community to come and look at the cats until the last cat ‘goes home’.

She said the biggest problem is that people still do not sterilise their cats. Their cats get sterilised as soon as they turn five months.

“There’s this misconception that cats are not emotional creatures.

“They are friendly, easy to look after, most loving and don’t have to be outside. When you are having a bad day, they can pick it up.

“Running this NPO has been rewarding because many of these animals have survived the most horrific situations.

“It has changed my life for the better, and I wouldn’t change a thing,” stated Jordan.
