Don’t leave your dogs unattended with bones

Edenvale SPCA appealed to pet owners in the community to be careful of what treats and rewards they give their dogs. This appeal comes after the SPCA responded to a call where a bone was stuck in the mouth of a dog.

Inspector Jade Nel said one of the Edenvale SPCA staff members responded to the call out in Chloorkop.

“The dog is fine and appreciated the staff member coming to its assistance. Educational advice was given and the owner now knows better.”

Nel said giving dogs cooked bones can be dangerous for them.

“Round marrow bones are just as dangerous, cooked or not. If they are not cut in half they can get stuck in the upper or lower jaw. If you want to treat your dog, give them raw and uncooked bones that are sold especially for dogs.”

Nel said bones should be larger than the mouth of a dog to minimise any possible danger.

“Never leave your dog unattended with a bone, hoof, toy or rawhide.

“Don’t give your dogs anything if you are not going to watch them closely to make sure they don’t bite off small pieces or start choking.

“Cooked bones break into fragments which can get stuck in stomachs and tear intestines, which can be fatal to your pet.”

Nel advised community members to conduct research and speak to a veterinarian to determine what the best treats for their dog would be.

“There are many good ways to give your pets enrichment with good healthy foods and ways to make it fun for them.”
