Basketball National League continues to grow across South Africa
The KwaZulu Marlins defeated the Western Cape Mountaineers 68-35 as the Basketball National League continued to showcase South Africa's top basketball talent.
The Basketball National League (BNL) has firmly established itself as South Africa’s premier domestic basketball competition, providing a platform for the country’s top talent while continuing to grow in stature, competitiveness and national reach.
Recently, the women’s Western Cape Mountaineers side took on the KwaZulu Marlins side at Mandeville Sports Club.
The two clubs faced the Mountaineers, winning 68 -35.

Over the past decade, the league has witnessed the rise of powerhouse clubs, the emergence of new champions and the successful expansion of its women’s division, reflecting the continued growth and development of basketball in South Africa.
The men’s competition has produced several championship-winning teams over the years, with Egoli Magic standing out as the most successful club in BNL history.
Their multiple league titles have cemented the Johannesburg outfit’s reputation as one of the country’s leading basketball clubs.

The Tshwane Suns dominated the league’s early years, winning the inaugural championships in 2013 and 2014 before reclaiming the title in 2017 and again in 2022.
More recently, the championship landscape has shifted. The Cape Town Tigers captured the 2023 title, followed by the KwaZulu Marlins in 2024, signalling a new era of competition and highlighting the growing depth of talent across the league.
The Soweto Panthers also made history by securing their maiden BNL championship in 2018.
The introduction of the women’s division marked another significant milestone for the league, creating a national stage for South Africa’s leading female basketball players.
Egoli Magic Women claimed the inaugural recorded women’s championship in 2021 before the Tshwane Suns Women lifted the 2021/22 title.
Since then, the Western Cape Mountaineers Women have established themselves as the dominant force in the competition, securing three consecutive league championships in 2022, 2023 and 2024.
Their sustained success reflects both the strength of the club and the continued growth of the women’s game in South Africa.
