Cleaning contract causes confusion

Council provided contradicting statements over the appointment of a short-term cleaning contractor for Eden Mall Taxi Rank.

In the February 13 edition of the NEWS, council came under fire for again allowing contractors to waste money meant for the upkeep of Edenvale’s taxi ranks.
It emerged that while a cleaning contract for Eden Mall Taxi Rank was valued at R10 800 for two months, the cleaner employed to do the work, was only receiving R50 per day. If the cleaner worked for 40 days in the two-month period, he would receive only R2 000.
At the time spokesperson for the municipality, Mr Samuel Modiba, said SSL Trading (Pty) was awarded the Eden Mall contract.
In comment received on June 21, Mr Modiba said there was “no record of the appointment of that company (SSL Trading)”.
He also confirmed that no payment was made for the period in which the contractor claimed to have worked.
“The alleged contractor who claimed to have been appointed to clean the Eden Mall Rank failed to produce an official order. Investigations were conducted by the departments involved,” Mr Modiba said.
In the same June 21 comment received from Mr Modiba, he said short-term contracts were put in place for February and March.
“SSL Trading was appointed, however no payment was made because they did not clean the said rank,” he said.
