Miss Earth finalists announced
With the annual gala dinner nearing, Miss Earth South Africa recently announced the top 16 national finalists for 2013 which includes two Bedfordview residents.

Bedfordview will be represented by Carmen Lourreiro and Nicole Laxton.
In order to qualify for selection as a national finalist, each participant was required to complete a number of community upliftment projects and education and greening campaigns.
A panel of judges reviewed each participant’s submissions, project impacts, blog posts, social media activations and personal e
ngagements in order to determine which women would progress to the next phase of the programme.
The national finalists were part of a group that jetted off to Cape Town to join Reliance Compost as they greened the city through a series of school projects, beach clean-ups and volunteer sessions at SANCCOB Marine Bird Rehabilitation Centre.

On their return, the national finalists took a tour of Sappi’s Enstrata Paper Mill. The
experience was designed to educate the women on the importance of responsible practices and sustainable farming methods used in Sappi’s paper manufacturing process.
Additionally, a number of greening and community upliftment projects, in the spirit of making every day a Mandela Day, took place during the finalists’ week in Johannesburg. The Miss Earth South Africa with Consol, Tsogo Sun, Reliance Compost, Fourways Farmers Market, Garnier and Imperial Toyota greened Solwazi Primary School in Orange Farm as part of this legacy project. There, 95 indigenous trees were planted to honour Madiba.
Each national finalist now has four weeks to finalise her preparation for the Miss Earth South Africa 2013 gala event which takes place on August 17.
