Joao represents Portugal at Confed Cup

Joao Pita, a grade 9 soccer player at Jeppe High School for Boys, represented Portugal in the Confederations Cup held in Denmark last month.

His side won the tournament, winning all five of their games. The final was against Mexico, which they won 3-0. Joao was awarded the Silver Ball for being the second best player at the tournament, as voted for by Fifa representatives running the tournament.

Mr Eugene Stolk, a teacher at the school, said due to the worldwide footprint of Portuguese football, there are 14 regional sides. Joao plays for region 12, which is based in Johannesburg. This side won the qualifying tournament to represent Portugal in the U/15 age group of the Confederations Cup.

Joao also represented Portugal in France in 2010 (U/12), in England 2011 (U/13) and in Spain in 2012 (U/14).

He has been capped over 120 times for Portugal throughout his age groups. Joao hopes to play for the senior men’s national side one day.

“We wish him all the best for his football career and are extremely proud of him here at Jeppe,” said Mr Stolk.
