Jumpers blaze victims assisted
Residents of the Jumpers Informal Settlement in Cleveland will have a degree of temporary relief.
This comes after 180 shacks were razed to the ground during a fire that left 600 people destitute earlier this month.
The MTN SA Foundation stepped in and partnered with the City of Johannesburg in supporting victims of the disaster. Those affected by the fire include women, the elderly, vulnerable children from child-headed homes and people living with disabilities.
The foundation handed over 200 food parcels to the victims on October 18. The foundation is committed to supporting initiatives that help effect real changes in communities, making lives a little better for the victims. “When we first heard about this unfortunate incident on the radio, we heard Clr Alison van der Molen requesting corporates and communities to assist. We felt the need to lend a helping hand and show our support as a responsible corporate citizen. We were concerned about the well-being of this community and knew that food parcels would mean a lot to the destitute who lost everything,” said Mrs Kusile Mthunzi-Hairwadzi, the general manager at the MTN Foundation. The food parcels were given to over 250 households at the Jumpers Informal Settlement. Each food parcel contained bath soap, a face cloth, body lotion, deodorant, toothpaste, a 10kg bag of maize meal, baked beans, sugar, cooking oil and tinned fish.
Ward 118 councillor, Clr Alison van der Molen, was pleased at the hand over. “We are happy with the MTN Foundation’s support and this contribution will go a long way in improving the lives of the underprivileged community of Jumpers and the surrounding areas. This will help sustain people for over the month. It is a lifeline and a heartfelt thank you is deserved,” said Clr van der Molen.
