Residential roadside refuse dumps
In the first case, a resident had dumped household refuse in a council bin on the corner of Horwood Street and Fifteenth Avenue.
The ward 18 councillor in Edenvale, Clr Heather Hart, has expressed her growing concerns over residents dumping building rubble outside houses.
“In just a short walk I was able to see three clear cases of residents abusing council bins and property,” said Clr Hart.
In the first case, a resident had dumped household refuse in a council bin on the corner of Horwood Street and Fifteenth Avenue.
“The bin was overflowing with refuse and it was stinking,” she said.
There was also a pile of building rubble placed next to the bin.
“Another pile of building rubble was dumped outside a property on Horwood Street,” said Clr Hart.
“This is nothing short of disgusting,” she added.
The communications and marketing department of the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality (EMM) commented on the matter and said one of the challenges faced when dealing with matters such as this, is that the refuse dumping usually takes place at night.
“These activities are difficult to control,” said the department.
According to the EMM, not only are residents dumping household refuse in council pavement bins, but businesses are following suit.
“The pavement bins are meant for pedestrians to use to curb littering. We strongly condemn these actions and will do anything in our power to find the culprits and have them remove the dumped refuse,” the department said.
Council urged residents to report other illegal dumping to either the EMPD or to the waste management services by phoning 011 999-4660.
When reporting culprits to the EMPD, vital information to include would be possible registration plate numbers, the time the dumping took place and the location.
“The EMM strives to collect refuse on a weekly basis. Residents should only put their household refuse out on dedicated collection days,” the department said.
It further advised that residents and businesses can apply for additional bins if the refuse being generated cannot be accommodated in the bins provided.
“There are also bulk refuse container services provided to cater for building rubble and other bulky refuse such as old furniture, which cannot be collected by refuse removal trucks,” said the department.
For enquires on either of the services, residents can contact the waste management services.
