Residents are reminded to report suspicious activity to the Edenvale SAPS sector police vehicles.
This comes after a number of police officers received tip offs via their private cellular phones.
“Police officers are not on duty 24 hours a day. As much as they would like to be, the truth is they are not,” said acting spokesperson for the Edenvale SAPS, Lieutenant Colonel Robbie Roberts.
He added that in one case, a tip off which could have led to an arrest was sent at 2am to a police officer while he was at home.
“The message was only read later that morning. If the resident had called the patrolling sector police vehicle, the suspect may have been arrested,” said Lt Col Roberts.
Edenvale residents living or working in Marais Steyn Park, Dowerglen, Dunvegan, Elma Park or the part of the Avenues from Horwood Street to Hendrik Potgieter Street fall under Sector 1. The Edenvale Hospital and the Sizwe Hospital also fall under Sector 1. The Sector 1 vehicle contact numbers are 071 675 6840 and 071 675 6841.
Edenvale residents living or working in Greenstone, Eastleigh, Illiondale, De Klerk’s Hof and the part of the Avenues from Hendrik Potgieter Street to Aitken Road fall under Sector 2. The Sector 2 vehicle contact numbers are 071 675 6842 and 071 675 6843.
Edenvale residents living or working in Isandovale, Harmelia, Highway Gardens, Edenglen or Hurlyvale fall under Sector 3. The Sector 3 vehicle contact numbers are 071 675 6844 or 071 675 6845.
In addition to having six vehicles patrolling three sectors, the Edenvale SAPS also has an anonymous crime tip-off line.
This pilot project aims to give residents a direct, anonymous, link to the SAPS for crime tip-offs.
Only tip-offs from Edenvale will be accepted and residents are asked not to send ‘please call me’s’ to the number.
Keep in mind that information needs to be detailed and should include an address, a detailed description of the crime being committed as well as the time.
Where-ever possible, also include a description of the person or people breaking the law.
Lt Col Roberts urged residents to save the Edenvale crime tip-off number 011 056-8886, as well as their sector vehicle numbers, on their cellular phones.
