Resident condemns crime in Malvern
"We recently had a case where the community was asked to help, yet we were kept in the dark about developments. As I speak to you, I do not know what the latest is on the matter,”
Mr Wilton Cele is a 51-year-old Malvern resident who has had enough of crime in the area.
He has been a resident of the area since 1989. “There is a big difference compared to when I first moved here. It all starts with good neighbourly relations. Residents need to know their neighbours,” said Mr Cele.
He said his main concern was the dissemination of information to the community in the fight against crime.
“We recently had a case where the community was asked to help, yet we were kept in the dark about developments. As I speak to you, I do not know what the latest is on the matter,” said Mr Cele.
He lamented the lack of recreational activities in the area, saying such activities could help in keeping children away from the streets. “Get children and the youth to take part in activities. In some homes, there is a lack of control and supervision due to parents working long hours,” said Mr Cele.
According to him, the relationship between drugs and crime is evident in the community. “Addicts need money to fund their habits and crime is an easy way to do that. They will choose the easiest target,” said Mr Cele. He said the community was feeling helpless in the fight against crime, as officers appear to be friendly with the dealers.
“The community must be active and keep on fighting the good fight. We cannot be seen to be accepting things as they are,” said Mr Cele. He called for the establishment of more organisations in the community. “There must be organisations that are ready to deal with matters concerning women and children, who are most vulnerable,” said Mr Cele.
