Event raises awareness of support structures
The Jeppe SAPS partnered with the Johannesburg Housing Company in a crime awareness campaign near the Baptist Church in Troyeville on March 8.
The purpose of the event was to inform and educate community members on the different services offered, with the aim of helping residents make more informed decisions.
Ms Mmatshepo Morokolo, the community developed officer for the Johannesburg Housing Company said, “We as the Johannesburg Housing Company and the Jeppe SAPS have combined our efforts, along with the neighbourhood development and other organisations, to combat the social issues of this community. We invited organisations like Life Line, the South African Council of Alcohol and Drug Dependency, the South African Institute for Crime Prevention and the Reintegration of Offenders, as well as The Department of Home Affairs, to spread awareness to people that there are support structures in place for the community.”
“We have identified that people do not have the awareness of these organisations to support them; some people don’t even have identity documents and that’s where having Home Affairs here helps,” said Ms Morokolo.
Warrant Officer Richard Munyai, from the Jeppe SAPS said, “We handed out brochures and pamphlets containing information about the steps to take for various scenarios, such as burglaries and robberies, as well as sector numbers to help spread awareness to community members. Volunteers went from house to house handing out this information to the community. People who do not have identity documents cannot find a job and resort to crime. We need to prevent issues like these. Prevention is better than cure.”
