Rotary presents Paul Harris award

Elandspark School was the host of the Rotary Club of Bedfordview meeting on March 18.

The Paul Harris Award was presented at the meeting and two new members were inducted into the Rotary Club of Bedfordview.

Following a welcoming from the Elandspark School principal, Mr Josua Du Plessis and the president of the Rotary Club of Bedfordview, Mr Bill Viggers, the prestigious Paul Harris Award was presented to Ms Hettie van Niekerk, a teacher at Elandspark School.

Ms Van Niekerk was presented the award for her service beyond the normal line of duty and for demonstrating service above self.

“Ms Van Niekerk demonstrates caring for others far beyond the norm and the pupils at Elandspark School are fortunate to have her. She bakes cupcakes at her own expense and sells them so she can help in providing uniforms for the pupils at the school,” said the secretary of the Rotary Club of Bedfordview, Mr David Leventhrope.

“Ms Van Niekerk also ensures that the less fortunate pupils at the school receive a healthy and substantial meal every day and has helped organise food parcels for pupils to take home over the weekend.

“She makes a valuable contribution to the betterment of children’s lives,” said Mr Leventhrope.

After the evening dinner, Rotarian Ferdie Heyneke inducted Mr Issy Ndarane from Dawn Park and Ms Lucia Luvuno into the Rotary Club of Bedfordview.

People who have received the Paul Harris Award include Mother Teresa, Luciano Pavarotti and former president, Nelson Mandela.
