Pikitup responds to service delivery concerns
Pikitup has taken note of service delivery concerns raised and an inspection in conjunction with the local ward councillor will be arranged.
This was stated by Ms Pansy Oyedele, from Pikitup, following a public meeting held at which residents and Clr Carlos da Rocha raised concerns about service delivery breakdowns.
Several members of the public from ward 118 and 66 attended a meeting held by Clr da Rocha on June 21 to discuss problems experienced with Pikitup.
During this meeting, he and members of the community highlighted their concerns to Pikitup officials.
According to Clr Da Rocha, these wards have been a mess for several months.
He accused Pikitup of not keeping his ward clean for six months running up to the national elections.
He showed the officials several photographs taken in both wards to highlight the extremity of problems.
He emphasised the impact of illegal dumping, stolen and damaged bins not being replaced for free and the lack of street sweeping.
“I complained about the bin policy as most poor residents do not replace their bins. They cannot afford to do so. Illegal dumping is exacerbated as some foreign nationals are not issued with bins and, as a result, some resort to dumping illegally. I showed the officials footage of staff sleeping and not doing their jobs,” he said.
Residents also expressed their concerns about bins being picked up and left far from the relevant properties on collection days. They said this creates problems, especially for the elderly who cannot walk long distances.
“In my opinion, a resident is a consumer and if one does not get their money’s worth, they should have a choice to employ someone who does provide the service they want.
“There is a lack of management and inspections, lack of bylaw enforcement and no supervision of work done.
“I am tired of dealing with Pikitup. My opinion is that if councillors complain about anyone or a service provider within reason, the managers should be axed. Facing being axed will force people to do the work,” he said.
In Pikitup’s preliminary response, Ms Oyedele said, “The concerns raised by Clr Da Rocha are duly noted. The matter has been referred to the depot responsible for this area. The depot will arrange for an inspection of the area in conjunction with Clr Da Rocha. We will advise on the plan of action as soon as feedback is received from the depot.”
