Fundraiser held for rhinos

"I had the privilege of encountering these beautiful animals close-up. They are tough and gentle at the same time. "

The Chinese Association Women’s Federation (CAWF) donated R10 000 to the Rhino Action Group Effort (RAGE) in support of the group’s core purpose of saving the rhinos from becoming extinct.

A fundraiser luncheon was held at Bedford Square on Saturday, June 28, to help support RAGE.

Ms Laura Clancy, from Talk Radio 702 who also sits on the committee of Lead SA, said RAGE was formed by Lead SA after numerous people called in expressing their concerns about the number of rhinos being poached.

The committee consists of representatives from SANparks, the SAPS, the Private Rhino Owners Association, Stop Rhino Poaching and other interested parties.

“We see our role as a safe conduit for public contributions to the fight against rhino poaching, whether it is financial, material or in the form of skills and information,” said Ms Clancy.

She said RAGE is a platform for people to turn their anger into effective action.

“I had the privilege of encountering these beautiful animals close-up. They are tough and gentle at the same time. It blows my mind that people think it is acceptable to slaughter them for some useless horn. You can help us raise awareness of the plight of the rhino,” said Ms Clancy.

The CAWF gave their donation to show that they too disapprove of what people are doing to rhinos.

Ms Teresa Leong from the CAWF said, “We wanted to help RAGE to prove that we are also animal lovers and that we care about what happens in our communities.”
