Potholes frustrate residents

Another resident, Mrs Yvonne Moloto, echoed the same sentiment, saying the powers that be needed to take action before it was too late.

The ward 20 councillor, Clr Jill Humphreys, has encouraged Bedfordview residents to report potholes in the area.

This came after residents took to social media to complain about potholes which have made many roads dangerous to drive on.

One resident posted, “Van Buuren, Van der Linde and Kloof roads are some of the worst and it is getting worse.”

Another resident, Mrs Yvonne Moloto, echoed the same sentiment, saying the powers that be needed to take action before it was too late.

“We have to worry about replacing our tyres sooner that we used to, and then we also need to worry about possibly causing accidents as we swerve to avoid craters in our roads, which we pay taxes for,” she added.

Hawley, Talisman, Concorde and Harper roads were also of concern to many motorists.

Meanwhile, the DA’s Gauteng Shadow MEC for Roads and Transport, Clr Neil Campbell, said motorists whose vehicles are damaged by potholes should report the incident to the SAPS on either a collision report or an occurrence book entry.

He said, “The DA will continue to pressure the municipality to get its house in order to ensure the pothole crisis is resolved.”

Speaking at the recently held council meeting, the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality’s (EMM) executive mayor, Clr Mondli Gungubele, admitted that potholes were a frustration to Ekurhuleni’s motorists and that the problem was escalating as rains continue to fall.

He said Bidvest Velocity had come on board to assist the EMM in dealing with potholes at no cost to the municipality.

“The company started doing work late last year and resumed at the beginning of February. Our Roads and Stormwater Department is working on a plan that will ensure the gap presently plugged by Bidvest in dealing with potholes is permanently closed going forward to avoid the present status quo,” he said.
