Writers2000 look forward to more speakers

Ms Sommers dealt briefly with the traditional approach involving the chain of writer, agent, revisions, editor, revisions and publisher.

At the end of April, Ms Romy Sommers, author and chairperson of the Romance Writer’s Organisation of South Africa, addressed the Writers2000 club on the new paradigm of publishing.

She spoke about getting work published, an issue that usually provides writers with a challenge sometimes greater than completing their written work.

Ms Sommers dealt briefly with the traditional approach, involving the chain of writer, agent, revisions, editor, revisions and publisher.

She then spoke about the increasing trend of publishers opening up to direct submissions, with or without agent involvement.

Ms Sommers spoke from personal experience and loads of ongoing research on her subject.

She dealt with aspects including eBook publishing, self-publishing, cover designs, editors’ varying styles and idiosyncrasies, and also provided an insight into the Big Five international book publishers and their varying styles.

On Saturday, May 30, the guest speaker at Writers2000 will be Ms Marion Scher, award-winning author and one of South Africa’s top freelance journalists for the last 25 years.

In June, the club looks forward to hosting Mr Anthony Ehlers, who has written for more than 20 years and has taught creative writing for almost 10 years.

He will be conducting a workshop on Saturday morning, June 27, which will focus on the subject of Unity in Writing.

As the guest speaker in the afternoon, Mr Ehlers will talk about the evolution of viewpoint writing.

Meetings take place on the last Saturday of the month at the Rand Aid Complex, situated at the corner of Wordsworth and Modderfontein roads in Lyndhurst.

Meetings start at 1.30pm for 2pm and there is a cover charge of R15 for visitors.
