Another police officer dies after Jeppe shoot out

The SAPS has lost another member following a shootout next to the Jeppe hostel.

The police officer who was shot during a shootout with suspects on Karl Street, next to the Jeppe hostel this morning, has died.

Three suspects were arrested.

Eyewitnesses at the scene say the men took the officer’s R5 service rifle.

Another eyewitness, who did not want to be named, said an AK47 was recovered at the scene.

Police officers were responding to information that the occupants of a nearby Toyota Quantum had tried to rob a man.

According to the eyewitness, a man told the patrolling officers what had happened to him.

“As the police officers approached the Quantum, the occupants started shooting at the police. One police officer was hit. The police officers returned fire. Two men were arrested and the police officer was airlifted to hospital,” said the eyewitness.

The officer was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital.

A Toyota Quantum was recovered during the arrests.
