Prof Jansen speaks to local pupils

Prof Janson said one needs more than just an education to succeed in life.

The University of Free State’s Vice Chancellor and Rector, Professor Jonathan Janson, told local school pupils they should strive to exceed the government’s pass rate.

Prof Janson addressed pupils at Jeppe High School for Girls on July 24.

“Our country has institutionalised low standards in the school system. I don’t want you to think this is acceptable. Aim to excel in mathematics as a subject and not just maths literacy. Set your own standards,” he told pupils.

He urged parents to work with their children and to help them achieve their goals.

“I think we have become content with passing rather than passing well.

“That means if you simply pass, you will most likely not get a degree. You will not get a good job. Therein lies the danger – if you just buy into the current standards,” he said.

Prof Janson said one needs more than an education to succeed in life.

“Remember, you also need to respect others, irrespective of their beliefs, sexual orientation or colour of their skin,” said Prof Janson.
