The shortage of condoms in Gauteng is attributed to challenges emanating from service providers that failed to meet the required monthly quantities.

MEC Mahlangu said about 80 percent of goods and services procured by the department, which includes surgical gloves, bandages and condoms, are imported.
“We will continue to work tirelessly with the appointed service providers to rectify the situation,” she said.
Spokesperson Steve Mabona said in an effort to remedy the dramatic fluctuations in exchange rates, which sometimes leads to a collapse of the Rand, local companies should show that they can produce the said products in South Africa.
“The adequate distribution of condoms will always play a pivotal role in the prevention of HIV/Aids,” he said.
