JUST IN: About 100 shacks destroyed in blaze

Blaze destroys shacks at Mangolongolo Informal Settlement.

Cleveland SAPS confirmed numerous shacks were destroyed in a fire at Mangolongolo Informal Settlement in Denver today.

The fire broke out this afternoon.

Cleveland SAPS communications officer, Constable Mpho Mashakane said initial estimates indicate about 100 shacks were destroyed in the blaze. The cause of the fire has not been determined yet. No injuries have been reported.

60 shacks at the same informal settlement were destroyed in a fire in June this year. 115 adults and an unknown number of children were displaced after the June blaze.

In September 2010, more than 250 shacks burnt down in two separate fires. Four lives were lost in that blaze.

Last April, a fire in the settlement destroyed 44 shacks while in November yet another blaze reduced 50 shacks to ashes.
