The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) is investigating a case of murder following the shooting of a woman on Friday night.

Officers were in pursuit of a vehicle stolen in Iliondale when the incident occurred.

The stolen vehicle was travelling from Edenvale to Rabie Ridge when officers spotted a similar vehicle

Information suggests officers and private security services mistook the driver of the vehicle for the vehicle stolen in Edenvale.

Several shots were fired and the female driver of the vehicle was declared dead at the scene.

It is also understood that police officers from another responding police station opened fire at the vehicle.

The woman is believed to be the wife of a police officer stationed at the Sandton SAPS.
