Clean-up walk to be held
"The purpose of this community clean-up walk is not just to clean the streets, but to clean the minds of the community as well."
Unsigned Movement will host its annual clean-up walk on November 21.
The clean-up walk will cover Bez Valley, Troyeville and Kensington.
The City of Joburg, the Jeppe and Cleveland SAPS, the JMPD, community safety, the South African National Defence Force, Pikit-Up and churches from these areas will also take part in the walk.
“The purpose of this community clean-up walk is not just to clean the streets, but to clean the minds of the community as well. We want to rid our communities of all crime, which has been taking place in and around these communities.
“The minds of our residents have been filled with negativity. We don’t feel safe at all anymore and it is up to us to change that. We need to feel safe in our own space again. We want to be safe from health hazards, crime and everything else that is not good for the community,” said Unsigned Movement founder Nebo Masabatho.
Unsigned Movement was established in 2013.
The movement was inspired by the number of talented artists who did not have a platform to showcase their talent.
“The movement aims to empower artists to be able to build their own brands,” said Nebo.
Nebo said they look at different ways to express their art and for artists to add value in the community. The clean-up walk is one of the ways.
“We would like to invite the community to come and join this initiative as it benefits all parties involved. We feel it is important that the community shares their views on what else needs to be done in the community.
“It must be known that the clean-up walk belongs to the community and they must own it and play their part. The clean-up walk is to create awareness for the community to learn the importance of looking after our environment.
“It also symbolises the need to revitalise ourselves by cleaning up our bad habits, particularly before the festive season. We want the community to familiarise themselves with each other and to rid our area of all social ills which rob us of a safe, clean environment,” said Nebo.
The clean-up walk is entering its second year. The walk will also include a health talk.
