The future of reading – ebooks

"Writing for publication is a business and needs a business-like approach, complete with forward planning, budgeting and marketing plans."

Mr David Henderson of MyeBook – ePublishing, recently shared his views on ePublishing opportunities with members and guests of Writers2000.

Mr Henderson’s own journey into ePublishing began with a desire to help his father, who had remained on a hard-copy publishing plateau for about 10 years.

During the talk, he urged members to not let emotions get in the way of their books.

“Writing for publication is a business and needs a business-like approach, complete with forward planning, budgeting and marketing plans. Tackling ePublishing from beyond South African borders is a sound approach.

“Ironically, success outside South Africa somehow positions an author to secure easier and faster access to publication within South Africa,” said Mr Henderson.

He said most authors need an editor in order to finish the job professionally, and translating work into other languages extends the author’s market considerably.

“The book cover plays a massive part in marketing your ebook and the book title is equally important,” he said.

Writers2000 will be closing off the year with its AGM and members’ lunch at the end of November. Several speakers have already been booked for each month of 2016.

Contact the chairperson, Ms Nicolette Bosman, for more information about the speakers or the group on 082 924 5735.
