Jeppe CPF focuses on community safety
The forum also hopes to strengthen its partnership with schools in the precinct through the Schools Safety Programme.
The Jeppe Community Police Forum is gearing up for 2016 and is putting the community’s safety first.
The Jeppe CPF, together with the Jeppe SAPS management, will embark on efforts to strengthen the relationship with the community in fighting against crime.
In 2016, the forum aims to implement a number of interventions that are going to improve and encourage active community participation.
“I sincerely believe that it is better to prevent crime than to investigate crime. Roadshows, Imbizos and outreach programmes will be conducted to encourage public participation in all sector crime forum meetings,” said Mr Zola Dambula, the chairperson of Jeppe CPF.
The crime advice and awareness campaign will be strengthened with the aim of informing the community about the processes of reporting and preventing crime, informing the community on how to identify hot-spots and high risk areas, advice on how to prevent being a victim of crime, domestic violence with a special focus on women and children, and drugs and alcohol abuse awareness.
The forum also hopes to strengthen its partnership with schools in the precinct through the schools safety programme.
This programme focuses on the safety of pupils, from safety at the home to safety at school. It includes the safety of pupils after school as well.
Mr Dambula said more street committees in sector one, two and three will be established and assistance will be offered to sector four with the empowerment of the Izinduna’s forum, the taxi forum and the security forum.
“We cannot underestimate the role played by the community street patrollers, neighbourhood watches and private security companies.
“Meetings have been held with all interest groups together with our sector managers and the Jeppe SAPS management. The Jeppe SAPS station commander, Brigadier Govindsamy Mariemuthoo, has attended Sector 1 crime forum meetings and will be attending all meetings in the precinct together with members of his management team to engage and interact with the community.
“He has already engaged with community neighbourhood patrollers in Bez Valley,” said Mr Dambula.
The Jeppe CPF had a successful meeting with businesses in the precinct in terms of setting up a business forum.
“With all that we have planned for 2016, we need the public to support the sector crime forum. We encourage the community to attend sector crime forum meetings in their respective areas,” said Mr Dambula.
