The Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department’s (EMPD) Bylaw unit for Edenvale held a number of raids on overcrowded properties in Illiondale this morning.

Officers were accompanied by officials from the health and city planning departments from the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality (EMM) during the raid.

EMPD Inspector Martin Koekemoer said the overcrowding of houses happens often throughout Edenvale and the EMPD is only made aware of these problems by the community members.

The owners or representatives for the owners of the houses all received spot notices, stating that accommodation establishments were being run without the correct  permits from the Department of Health.

Follow up inspections will be conducted after 21 days to ensure that the properties have been rectified.
