Residents unhappy about food hawkers

Some residents of Greenstone have expressed their concerns regarding the food hawkers on Modderfontein and Van Riebeeck road.

Some residents of Greenstone have expressed their concerns regarding the food hawkers on Modderfontein and Van Riebeeck roads.

Ward 32 councillor, Clr Bongani Nkomo said this section of the land is a road reserve and as such no hawkers or vendors of any kind are allowed to trade on it.

“One of the food trailers is very unsafe as concrete blocks, bricks and wooden logs are used to stabilise it. The possibility of injury is high due to spillage of hot oil, food and water if one of these supports dislodge from under the trailer because of the movement of the staff inside,”said Clr Nkomo.

He said the other concern was that with hot food being prepared in these trailers, there must be running water, an ablution facility and food safety processes in place, such as hairnets and inspections.

Johannesburg Metro Police Department spokesperson (JMPD), Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar, said anyone one with complaints regarding the vendors must contact the JMPD management director of by-laws on 011 490 1630 and they will be given an email to send their complaints to.
