Jonga lends a helping hand to the community

The 23-year-old mother of one said she cannot sit at home and do nothing because of the high rate of unemployment.

Stella Jonga is a volunteer at the Cotlands Early Learning Group at Jumpers Informal Settlement just off Cleveland Road, where she has been assisting since January last year.

The 23-year-old mother of one said she could not sit at home and do nothing. “I do not have another job except this one. It doesn’t have to be about getting a salary every month. It is about making a difference to these children by giving them the extra care that they need,” said Jonga.

She said her daily activities include cooking for the children, accompanying them to the toilet and helping teachers where they need help.

“It is very sad to see people sitting at home because there are no jobs,” she said. Jonga said she dreams of getting a paying job one day, however, the bit that she is doing at the group gives her hope. “My three-year-old daughter also attends the school there. I love children and every day when I go to bed I know that I have made a different in someone’s life.”
