Girls excel at cricket

KENSINGTON – Jeppe High School for Girls' first cricket team do well in tournament.

Jeppe High School for Girls’ first cricket team had another fantastic season.

In the Central Gauteng Inter-High School Girl’s Cricket Tournament, the team only lost one game in the league stages, making it to the semifinals comfortably.

The semifinal was played against Alberton High School with home-ground advantage. Due to rain, the match was played over two days with Jeppe emerging victorious.

Jeppe then travelled to Soweto to defend their tournament title and won the toss. They elected to bat and scored 94/3 in 20 overs. In response, Soweto needed 13 runs off the last over and then six runs off the last ball. In the end, Soweto was restricted to 91 with Jeppe retaining their title.

In September, the first team also won the inaugural PinkDrive Tournament. This tournament was held as part of an initiative which aims to make a difference in the lives of young female pupils from diverse backgrounds and to empower them through sport.

The Jeppe team played a round-robin tournament against five other schools. Jeppe finished on top of the log and advanced to the semifinals which they won convincingly.

They played against Phafogang High School in the final and took home the trophy.
