Women lend a helping hand

She said during the talks, various speakers tackle topics affecting women and people in general.

Two Bedfordview women have joined hands to make life more bearable for struggling families.

Ms Lyn Smit and Ms Heather Dubbleman first started Community Blessings eight years ago.

The duo said they launched the project because of their love for people.

“We saw a need in ours, as well as surrounding communities, and decided to take action,” said Ms Dubbleman.

In order to raise money for causes close to their hearts, the team used to host a morning market at one of the residencies.

Food, clothing, jewellery, gifts and craft were sold in the various stalls.

Due to security threats, they are no longer able to carry on with the market.

“However, we have tried to be innovative in our approach to fundraising. We have launched our morning talks which we will host at the Belgravia Bowling Club,” said Ms Smit.

She said during the talks, various speakers tackle topics affecting women and people in general.

“All proceeds from the talks and any other events that we host will go towards the courses,” said Ms Dubbleman.

She said Community Blessings is about making real difference in the lives of everyday people.

“We cannot afford to make big monetary donations, but we fill the gap for people in need of help who cannot access charity organisations,” said ms Smit.

Some of the work done includes paying for therapy sessions for a mother who struggled to cope with the loss of her son.

The inaugural talk was held last Friday and Dr Renate Volpe was the keynote speaker.

Ms Smit said members of the community willing to volunteer to give a talk, should contact the duo.

“We also call on residents to come out and help us to support the community. We also have exciting things planned for these events, it will be worth your while,” said Ms Dubbleman.

For more information, the duo can be contacted on their cellphones.
